Scope the data before adding a tool
List the exact records and fields the agent needs for its task. Give it the narrowest practical access, separate read access from write access, and keep credentials outside prompts and user-visible logs. Decide where data is processed and which records must not be sent to a model.
Limit actions to a defined job
Expose specific operations with validated inputs instead of broad administrative access. Check each request against the user, record, and action it is allowed to affect. Reject unknown fields, unexpected destinations, and requests outside the approved workflow.
Put people at consequential decision points
Require review before irreversible or high-impact actions, such as issuing a payment, changing permissions, or sending a binding commitment. Show the reviewer the source information, proposed action, and reason needed to make a decision.
Make every action traceable and recoverable
- Record the request, decision, tool call, approval, result, and error with appropriate data minimization.
- Use idempotent operations or duplicate checks for actions that may be retried.
- Define timeouts, retry limits, alerts, and a manual route for unresolved cases.
- Provide a way to pause the agent and revoke its access without disabling unrelated systems.
Test with realistic edge cases
Test ambiguous, incomplete, conflicting, and malicious inputs, along with expired credentials and downstream outages. Measure whether the system follows the scope, asks for review when required, and stops safely when it cannot complete the task.
